SET Maritime & Electrical is located in Brisbane and was established in 2011 by Mark Smith, an Electrical Contractor, AMSA Accredited Marine Surveyor and a Chartered Marine Engineer with over 40 years’ experience. Mark is a member of the Australasian Institute of Marine Surveyors, and Fellow of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST).

Over the last six years whilst surveying hundreds of vessels for electrical compliance, Mark discovered that shore connections (specifically the connection box for ship to shore electricity supply), were not compliant to the Australian Standards. Further to this, the most critical safety factor is a very serious risk of electrical hazard including electrocution.

Concerned that boat owners were unknowingly noncompliant and at risk of serious injury, Mark set out with the purpose to come up with a unique new design for a ‘plug and play’ shore connection box that would solve these issues.

The design process took over three years of extensive research and development to develop circuit arrangements and prototypes prior to the actual  manufacturing of the device. Mark spoke with Government bodies, regulatory bodies, industry representatives, boat owners and his peers to discuss this solution taking away positive feedback on his prototype device.
