Calix is an Australian technology company that is developing new processes and materials to solve global challenges. The management of aquaculture ponds for the growth of shrimp and prawns is critical to famers in maximising their productivity and economic returns. Many supplements are used by farmers to treat the ponds, and a challenge undertaken by Calix has been to develop a single product that addresses many of the issues faced by farmers.

Starting in 2014, a number of small field trials in fish ponds were undertaken in Australia in which the farming ponds were treated with AQUA-Cal+. These trials showed great promise with indications that fish were healthier and potentially adding weight faster. There were definite indications that the pond water and bottom sludge conditions were significantly more favourable to fish health and growth, and that downstream environmental impacts from aquaculture were more easily manageable.

Almost two years after developing and trialling AQUA-Cal+, principally for the shrimp and prawn markets, a patented manufacturing facility was setup, with commercial sales commencing in late 2016.

Many countries have started initiating import controls for certain species of farmed seafood from Asia in recent years. The action was in response to numerous cases of contamination. Quality control in imported products such as these can be expected to continue to tighten in the coming years to ensure fish and other aquatic species imported from countries that depend on different environmental regulations are safe to eat.

AQUA-Cal+ is non-toxic, non-corrosive, safe, and environmentally friendly, providing farmers with a cost-effective water treatment solution without having to use harmful chemical water treatment systems which could lead to threatening quality control measures.

In Australia, AQUA-Cal+ is also certified as an organic product.
